At least you need a tradeoff between the usually sharper edges and the studs. Optimally would be that the studs have real modeled bevel edges and the rest can be controlled by a bevel shader. I am using 0.3 in Blender with the new Bevel node available in the daily builds only atm.
In Maya I have another option by using a curvature node I can set to concave and convex. I use a higher bevel edge of 0,025 for the convex bevels and a value of 0,01 for the concave and combine them with a mixer node for a normal shading.
