"Stomp, stomp, stomp go the powerful feet as this ferocious robotic dinosaur patrols the planet. Its head swivels, its claws grabs and its tail and arms move up and down too—so those aliens better look out when this member of the Roboforce is on patrol! Includes one Roboforce figure and three robo disks." -- (Description from the LEGO Shop At Home Spring 1997 catalog. A bit deceitful, I must say, as two of the "robo disks" are part of the build, and overall, this model is pretty "light" on accessories).
This set no. 2152 'Robo Raptor' came out in 1997 as part of a short-lived, NA-exclusive "Roboforce" subtheme. In their absence on British and European markets, LEGO Space was very out-of-balance that year, with uprising evil alien forces taking over. (And the '97-98 season, indeed, was the end of the "Classic Space" multi-factions era, as Star Wars launched in 1999 became LEGO's main priority outside of the Solar System).
The 'Robo Raptor,' clocking at 220 parts plus one figure, was on a smaller end of the range. It was one of two "animalistic" robots, and the only model finished in black-and-yellow. It's also the only RoboForce set that didn't feature a detachable flying pod, even though the build is still somewhat modular: both the rotating head (equipped with two lasers) and legs separate easily from the body, but Raptor only walks, essentially, and has no apparent engines or turbines suggesting flying.
The robot's legs had three parallel double beams inside, so it "slides" on the ground, so to speak, by shifting them back-and-forth a little bit; not the most exciting playability. Robo Raptor has two identical manipulators that move only in the shoulders (both with triple-fingered claws) and the tri-sectioned "scorpion" tail with a laser at the tip.
The set came with one minifigure, Chip Nebula, RoboForce commander, or one of the higher-ranked officers, at least. In addition to an exclusive "yellow" uniform, he has fully decorated feet and wears a transparent neon-green helmet. (He had the same face as the Unitron Chief). The Mar-Apr 1997 issue of LEGO Mania Magazine included a rather hilarious "profile" for Chip Nebula:
"Chip is now the universe's best robo runner. What's that? A robo runner is a certified robot operator. Mercury is one of Chip's favorite places in space because he can see two sunrises and sunsets each day on that small planet.
Favorite TV show: Third Rock from the Sun
Favorite Football Team: Toronto Robo Raptors"
