The Dyeus was the direct successor of the Ares program's Athena, built using parts of the Mars ferry as well as new components specifically designed for its new mission: taking humans to Jupiter and back. Over a hundred meters longer than its predecessor, the Dyeus was powered not by a slow-and-steady radioisotope ion drive but an extremely powerful linear fusion engine called Valkyrie, developed jointly by JPL and ESA. The Dyeus also carried a complex multi-method shielding system that included an extremely strong nuclear-powered magnetic shield generator, to ward the vessel and its inhabitants against both solar wind and the intense radiation belts of Jupiter itself.

The Dyeus was the first of three interplanetary shuttles built for the Janus program, the 57-year mission program that aimed (and succeeded) to enable human exploration of the Sol system's gas giants. Its siblings, Enlil and Tiwaz, were built in Dyeus' image many decades later, and later still the BIFROST project used the design of the Dyeus as inspiration for their Sleipnir model of interplanetary ferries. Dyeus served its crews faithfully across four missions of the Janus program, taking three crews to Jupiter over 30 years and a crew to Saturn on its last mission in 2082. Upon the Dyeus' return to Earth after Janus IV in 2097, it was decommissioned and its component parts held in orbital drydock to be repurposed in the future.
