The first heavier-than-air flying machine to ever take off, Isham Brownsmith's eccentric flying machine was a talking point of many an airship pilot. Drunken jokes were cracked at bars about a foolish bet made to attempt a powered flight in a glider and succeed. It was quickly found that the prop made the glider unstable, and rotary wings were added above. In short, it flew! Isham had the last laugh, and came into the possession of a lot of gold.
