Everyone should use the Filmic Blender color management for your future Mecabricks renderings.

To understand what this is and how to use it just watch here and follow the links to that movie:

In the film industry this method is a standard. Here's another video about a presentation by Alex Fry from Animal Logic (The LEGO Movie):

ACES is the advanced standard for color management. Now where we have an emulation called "Filmic Blender" by Troy Sobotka we should never ever work with sRBG color transform again.

You have to render in OpenEXR if you want to post-process the result. But you can't use it the usual sRGB workflow and open it in Photoshop. It would look wrong without the Filmic LUT (color Look Up Table). Your compositing software must support OpenColorIO to load the Filmic LUT to get the same result of the Blender color transform. And the compositing software must support a linear workflow.

You simply use the Blender compositor for this but as Andrew shows in his video you have to take care about some restrictions. I think that Filmic Blender will be standard in the future releases of Blender and they will upgrade the nodes for this.

If you like to use SheepIt you also have to think out of the box first because SheepIt isn't allowing OpenEXR output. Just PNG. You can render in PNG but the LUT will be baked into the file and you have the sRGB limits again. To fix this you finish your scene how you want it. You render a frame for a pre-compositing to do the final color grading and touch. Then you replace the "Image" node with "Render Layers" and you add a "Composite" node to the end of your composite. Then SheepIt will render the result of your scene and the composite.

But the main problem actually is that SheepIt is not using the Filmic Blender color transform yet. So we have to wait. I'll send them a message.

There is a Photoshop plug-in available under http://fnordware.blogspot.de/2017/02/opencolorio-for-photoshop.html which allows to integrate PS into your OCIO-based post-processing workflow. The same author also offers a solution for After Effects.

If Adobe ever wakes up from its cloud-driven stupor, we might get native support for AE and PS one day. Affinity Photo for example already allows for an end-to-end OCIO workflow. Krita as well.

Looks like it's not working with the Filmic Blender setup. I am not OCIO experienced. I will contact the developer.

Troy Sobotka fixed some errors after a chat and tried to modify it for MODO but it looks like that MODO isn't supporting Looks actually. I had posted a request to The Foundry on their forums.

Just as a side-note: apart from the Blender Compositor there's a better solution than Photoshop for post-processing renderings: Natron, an open-source and very powerful node-based compositing software free for personal and commercial use. It's similar to Nuke, natively supports OpenEXR, OpenColorIO (still needs testing in connection with filmic-blender), OFX plug-ins and more. Here some useful entry-level tutorials:

Other options for non-commercial use are the free versions of Blackmagic Fusion 8 or The Foundry Nuke. But guys, DO NOT use ANY of that stuff without a legit license, or you will be doomed! They actively trace piracy, so don't register for the free version and then use a cracked license with it!

I had totally forgotten about Natron. Yes, that's a good tip. And I also can recommend Fusion. The free version is perfect. And I can support what wlange says: don't even think about to use cracks these days. Especially when you have great alternatives like Blender, Natron and Fusion.

This is pretty cool! I've installed the filmic config, and I'll be trying it out more thoroughly later.

To use Filmic with the script, you need to update a value in replace.py
bpy.context.scene.display_settings.display_device = 'sRGB / BT.709'

Thanks Scrubs! I had replaced it with almost the exact the same thing, except for the spaces around the slash, and I wasn't sure why it wasn't working.
